Tenant Resources
Utilities, town by town.
Who to call, what to set up, what to have ready, and where to take what the trash cart won't.
Choose your town below. Your lease spells out which utilities are in your name. Set those up so service starts on your move-in date.
Before you call
Have these ready.
Each provider runs its own process, but most will ask for the same things. Having them on hand turns a long call into a short one.
Your signed lease
Some providers ask renters to upload or send a copy. Durham requires it.
Move-in date and address
Use the exact service address on your lease, including any unit number.
ID and identity details
A photo ID, plus your Social Security number or passport number for the credit check some utilities run.
A deposit, if asked
Several towns charge renters a deposit to open an account. The amounts are listed below where the town publishes them.
Lead time
Plan on two to three business days. Most providers will not start service on weekends or holidays.
