Fuquay Varina
Living in Fuquay-Varina, NC
Two downtowns. One hyphen.
Fuquay-Varina is two historic towns rolled into one, and it still has both downtowns to prove it. One grew up around a mineral spring, the other around a railroad depot and tobacco market. Today it's one of the fastest-growing towns in southern Wake County.
Why the hyphen?
Fuquay Springs and Varina merged in 1963 and kept both names. Fuquay comes from the Fuquay family, whose land held the mineral spring discovered around 1858. Varina grew up around the railroad.
Fuquay-Varina sits in southern Wake County, with Holly Springs to the northwest, Garner to the northeast and Angier to the south. It counted about 34,150 residents in 2020, and Census estimates put it near 48,500 by 2025.
Older streets near both downtowns give way to established subdivisions, newer planned communities and fast-growing shopping corridors.
