Clayton
Living in Clayton, NC
From Stallings' Station to center stage.
Clayton started as a railroad stop and grew into one of Johnston County's liveliest towns. Its old schoolhouse is now a performing arts center, sculptures line its streets, and a paved trail follows the Neuse River right through town.
Before it was Clayton
The town began as Stallings' Station, a railroad stop named for the Stallings family, on the line linking Raleigh with eastern North Carolina. It was renamed Clayton and incorporated in 1869.
Clayton is in western Johnston County, just southeast of Raleigh and Garner. It counted about 26,300 residents in 2020, and Census estimates put it near 32,600 by 2025.
The town pairs a traditional downtown grid with established neighborhoods, large planned communities and a fast-growing life-sciences hub along US 70 and NC 42.
