North Carolina Heat Wave: Protect Your HVAC System With These Simple Steps

Beat the Heat: Simple HVAC Tips That Can Keep Your Home Cooler This Summer

Protect your comfort, reduce unnecessary repairs, and help your air conditioning system perform at its best during North Carolina's hottest days.

Summer in North Carolina doesn't ease into the season. It arrives with soaring temperatures, relentless humidity, and air conditioners that suddenly become the hardest-working appliance in the house.

When temperatures climb into the upper 90s and beyond, even a well-maintained HVAC system has to work overtime. That's why a little preventative maintenance now can go a long way toward keeping your home comfortable while reducing unnecessary wear on your equipment.

Whether you're a homeowner or a Resident, these simple steps can improve cooling performance and help prevent avoidable service calls during extreme weather.

Start With the Air Filter

If you only complete one maintenance task this summer, make it this one.

A clean HVAC filter allows air to move freely throughout your home. When the filter becomes clogged with dust, pet hair, and debris, airflow becomes restricted. The result is reduced cooling, higher energy bills, longer run times, and additional strain on the HVAC system.

For Residents of Auralia Residential managed properties, replacing HVAC filters is a lease responsibility and one of the easiest ways to protect both your comfort and the equipment.

A good rule of thumb is to inspect your filter monthly and replace it as needed, especially during the summer when your system is running the most.

Don't Overlook Thermostat Batteries

Many people never think about their thermostat batteries until the screen goes blank.

Weak batteries can cause communication issues between the thermostat and the HVAC system, sometimes creating symptoms that look like equipment failure.

Replacing the batteries once or twice each year is an inexpensive way to avoid unnecessary headaches.

The Truth About Thermostat Settings

One of the biggest misconceptions about air conditioning is that lowering the thermostat dramatically will cool the house faster.

Unfortunately, that's not how air conditioners work.

Residential HVAC systems cool at a steady rate. Setting the thermostat from 74°F down to 68°F doesn't speed up the cooling process. It simply tells the system to continue running until it reaches that lower temperature.

A commonly recommended setting for energy efficiency is around 78°F, but every household has different comfort preferences. Choose a temperature that's comfortable for your family and avoid making constant adjustments throughout the day.

If you'll be away for several hours, raising the thermostat a few degrees is generally more efficient than turning the system completely off. Allowing the home to become excessively hot forces the HVAC system to work much harder when it's time to cool the house again.

Help Your HVAC System Do Its Job

Your air conditioner can only remove so much heat. Reducing the amount of heat entering your home helps the system work more efficiently.

Simple habits can make a noticeable difference:

  • Keep windows and exterior doors closed.
  • Close blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the afternoon.
  • Keep supply vents open and free from furniture or rugs.
  • Leave interior doors open whenever possible to improve airflow.
  • Run ceiling fans counterclockwise to circulate cool air and improve comfort.

Reduce Indoor Heat

Many everyday household activities create additional heat inside the home.

During extreme temperatures, consider:

  • Waiting until evening to use the oven.
  • Running the dishwasher after sunset.
  • Doing laundry during the morning or evening.
  • Limiting the use of other heat-producing appliances during peak afternoon hours.

These small adjustments reduce the workload placed on your HVAC system.

Is It Normal for an Air Conditioner to Run All Day?

Yes.

During periods of extreme heat, residential air conditioning systems commonly run for long periods, including continuously during the hottest hours of the day.

Most residential systems are designed to cool indoor temperatures approximately 18 to 22 degrees below the outdoor temperature. When outside temperatures approach or exceed 100°F, it is normal for your HVAC system to struggle to maintain your preferred thermostat setting while still operating properly.

Continuous operation by itself does not necessarily indicate that your system needs repair.

Before Calling for HVAC Service

Before assuming there's a mechanical problem, take a few minutes to verify the basics:

  • Is the thermostat set to COOL?
  • Is the thermostat set below the current room temperature?
  • Have the thermostat batteries been replaced recently?
  • Has the HVAC filter been replaced?
  • Has the circuit breaker tripped?

If you've just replaced the filter or batteries, allow the system 30 to 60 minutes to stabilize before deciding whether service is needed.

When Is It Time to Call?

Some situations require prompt attention.

You should contact your property manager or HVAC professional if:

  • The system will not turn on.
  • Warm air is blowing from the vents.
  • Water is leaking from the indoor unit.
  • Ice has formed on the equipment.
  • You smell something burning or hear unusual mechanical noises.
  • After completing the basic troubleshooting steps, the system continues running but cannot cool the home below 80°F.

Addressing genuine equipment issues quickly helps prevent additional damage while restoring comfort as soon as possible.

A Little Prevention Makes a Big Difference

North Carolina summers place tremendous demands on residential HVAC systems, but a few minutes of preventative maintenance can significantly improve performance.

Replacing your air filter, installing fresh thermostat batteries, reducing indoor heat, and understanding how your air conditioner is designed to operate all contribute to a more comfortable home and a healthier HVAC system.
